Mosques in Bosnia-Herzegovina 1992–2010

Forgetting and violence, as French philosopher Ernest Renan has argued, are integral factors of national formations. This lecture explores the spatial aspects of forgetting and violence within the process of nationalist division of Bosnia-Herzegovina through the lens of religious architecture. More specifically Akšamija investigates how the nationalist extremists seized on cultural heritage and religious monuments during the war of 1992–1995 in order to facilitate the realization of their expansionist projects. While all ethno-national groups in Bosnia experienced significant war losses, Bosnian Muslims suffered the greatest human and architectural casualties. The lecture will show how the extent and the genocidal nature of war violence against Bosnian Muslims has transformed the meaning of the mosque from a place of worship and religious-ethnic identity to a place of the ethnic body of the Bosniak nation. The lecture highlights the significance of ethnic symbols, long-term cultural factors and global cultural flows in the formation of nations. (Text: Azra Akšamija, http://www.azraaksamija.net/)

Azra Akšamija is a Sarajevo-born Austrian artist and architectural historian. She received her doctorate in History of Islamic Art and Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is currently Assistant Professor at the “MIT Program in Art, Culture and Technology”. She also holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture from Graz University of Technology (Austria) and Princeton University (USA). Akšamija’s Ph.D. dissertation explores how Bosnian Muslims construct their identity through the lens of rebuilt or newly built mosques following the systematic destruction of religious architecture during the Bosnian War 1992–1995. In her interdisciplinary practice, Akšamija works with different media, such as sculpture, video and textile. Her work investigates identity politics in art and architecture, with focus on representations of ‘Islam in the West’ and the transformative conflict-mediation through cultural education and pedagogy. Her work has been shown internationally.

Diese werden im Rahmen einer Ausstellung vom 19. Jänner 2012 bis zum 1. Februar 2012 in der Aula der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien ausgestellt.

Seungkoo Jo – Between Transformation and Evolution: Growth, Globalization, and People

Cities have been analyzed in historical and theoretical terms. There is a close relationship between urban society and formal and spatial con- figurations of cities in Korea. Urban form is not previous to the social phenomena. It is a product, it is built history. The city was redefined and built from scratch. Society would accommodate itself to its proposals, and it had to be persuaded to live within the new or old social formal context. During the past 30 years, urban change and transformation in Korea occurred at a very radical pace. Unlike European Cities, urban transformation and evolution seem to be an ongoing process in which strong interventions are involved in Korean Modern architecture. Buildings are not built one framework, they are a succession of frame- works over time; growth, globalization, people. In this sense, buildings in Korea can be read and understood from two perspectives: The first looks at buildings as a result of a continuous process, the other as a product of a certain moment in history.

Im Laufe ihrer Geschichte hat die ZV eine Fülle von Vorträgen und Diskussionen mit bedeutenden Architekten und Vertretern jener wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen geführt, die für die Entwicklung der Architektur von Bedeutung waren, u.a. mit Architekten wie Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, Pier Luigi Nervi, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Scharoun, Alvar Aalto, Pierre Vago, Kenzo Tange, Alfred Roth, Ernst Neufert, Walter Förderer, Richard Neutra, sowie mit Wissenschaftlern wie Robert Jungk, Theodor W. Adorno, Lucius Burckhardt, Golo Mann u.a.

Cities worldwide are facing rapid social, economic, environmental, technological and cultural changes such as: rapid urbanisation, aging of society, security issues, housing emergency, new solutions on mobility, integration of immigrants, food and water shortage, etc.

Especially in times of economic crisis and demographic changes in cities, it is necessary to think about how to best handle what we have, and therefore “RE-MIXING THE CITY” is a challenge to manage and re-combine the elements which make our modern cities in order to better respond to change. REAL CORP 2012 in Schwechat will offer the possibility to collectively discuss a wide range of topics in different panel groups and workshops.

EXHIBITION: David Maljković – Exhibition for Secession

The collages, films, and architectural mises-en-scène of the Croatian artist David Maljković form part of the current critical engagement with modernism. Maljković turns his attention to sculptural and architectonic symbols that, against the backdrop of Yugoslav socialism, signified the dawn of a new era. He renegotiates these on a historic, cultural, and theoretical level by relating it to the present and the future. In his exhibition at the Secession he takes a different path: He reflects his own previous ideas by giving many of his existing works a radical restaging. Objects developed as presentation structures for other contexts and contents will be cleared out and emptied. Maljković arranges these objects in the main exhibition hall and accents them only with minimal marks and interventions like fog or sounds.

EXHIBITION: Bernd Oppl - Delay Room

In seinen Videoinstallationen beschäftigt sich Bernd Oppl mit der medialen Abbildungen des Phäno- mens Raum. In „Delay Room“ transferiert der Künstler zunächst filmische Szenen in ein bewegliches Miniaturmodell, um dieser Vorlage schließlich eine Videokamera zu implementieren und das daraus resultierende Bildmaterial in Echtzeit wiederzugeben. Der leere Raum ist dabei nicht nur Kulisse, sondern Hauptdarsteller ,der in einem choreographierten und endlos fortdauernden Bewegungsablauf verharrt. Die Grenzen des Raums – und damit der Raum selbst – scheinen sich aufzulösen und irritieren die Wahrnehmung der BetrachterInnen, die den Ursprung der Bewegung nicht mehr verorten können. Der Künstler erzeugt Situationen, in denen das bewegte Bild als architektonische Kunst begriffen und wahrgenommen wird. Der Raum wird zur Handlung und schließlich zur potenziellen Grundlage für Erzählungen.

Was bedeutet städtische Öffentlichkeit heute und welchen Einfluss nehmen Privatisierung, Kommerzialisierung, Festivalisierung oder auch Musealisierung auf die Integrationsfunktion städtischer Teilräume? Diese Fragen bilden die Basis für die Auseinandersetzung mit der Diskrepanz zwischen vernachlässigten öffentlichen Stadträumen und jenen, die durch geplante oder ungeplante Aufwertungsprozesse im Fokus der (medialen) Öffentlichkeit stehen. Die Frage von Authentizität und Inszenierung wird dabei insbesondere im Kontext von Inklusions- und Exklusionsprozessen diskutiert, die im öffentlichen Raum wirksam werden. Doch was kann und muss dieser vor dem Hintergrund des gesellschaftlichen Strukturwandels eigentlich noch leisten? Welche Akteursgruppen erheben Ansprüche darauf? Ist die Frage nach den Aneignungsmöglichkeiten und somit der Integration
marginalisierter Bevölkerungsgruppen vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender Kommodifizierung ohnehin bereits obsolet geworden? Wie geht die Stadtplanung mit diesen Problematiken um? Wo verortet sich dabei die Kunst und welche Rolle spielen künstlerische Interventionen im öffentlichen Raum?

EXHIBITION: Die Stadt ist uns nicht egal

Eine pulsierende Großstadt wie Wien verändert sich schnell: Aus diesem Grund braucht es Menschen, die über diese Veränderungen mitentscheiden und mitdiskutieren.

Der Stadt ist es ein großes Anliegen, dass partizipative Prozesse fixer Bestandteil in der Planung sind. Und dafür gibt es zwei Möglichkeiten: Einerseits können Wienerinnen und Wiener selbst aktiv werden und den Lebensraum Stadt mitgestalten. Die wichtigste Anlaufstelle dafür sind die Büros der Lokalen Agenda 21. Andererseits kommt auch die Stadt Wien aktiv auf die Bürgerinnen und Bürger zu, wenn Stadtentwicklungsprojekte gestartet werden.

In der Ausstellung wird anhand von 18 Beiträgen veranschaulicht, wie Ideen zu Projekten werden und so Bewegung in die Stadt kommt.
